PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY INDUSTRIES . PHARMACEUTICALS, ASTRAZENECA AND BREAST CANCER. IS ONE OF THE MOST COMMONLY DIAGNOSED CANCERS AMONG WOMEN. MANY ORGANIZATIONS INCLUDING THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY. AND SUSAN.

COMMUNITY EVENTS PROMOTING AWARENESS AND CONTRIBUTIONS TO RAISE FUNDS AND RESEARCH AND HOW.

BREAST CANCER IS DIAGNOSED AND TREATED.

IN 2021 MORE THAN 281,550 NEW CASES OF BREAST CANCER ARE EXPECTED TO BE DIAGNOSED. INCREASES EARLY DETECTION.

REDUCES DEATH. REDUCES LIFE EXPECTANCY AND LATE STAGE CANCER DIAGNOSIS. AND INCREASES FIVE-YEAR SURVIVAL RATES. AGAINST CANCER IS A FUNDRAISING ORGANIZATION STARTED BY THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY.

THE LARGEST NETWORK OF BREAST CANCER EVENTS IN THE UNITED STATES. THEY HOST WALKING EVENTS TO RAISE MONEY. AS WELL AS PROVIDING PATIENT SERVICES LIKE CHEMO. FREE PIECES TO STAY.

WE HAVE MULTIPLE ALGAE IMPACTING US.ED TIDE FROM THE WEST COAST IS COMING AROUND THE EAST COAST.

THE NORTHERN PART OF THE LAGOON HAS BLOCKED OUT SOME LINE.

THE BLUE-GREEN ALGAE HAS BEEN OCCURRING ALL UP AND DOWN THE LAGOON. IT IS OF PARTICULAR CONCERN.

SPECIALLY KNOWING WHEN YOU HAVE EVENTS LIKE THIS.

THIS IS NOT PHOTOSHOPPED. IN THE ST. LUCIE ESTUARY.

IN 2016. IT IS AN ALARMING STATE OF AFFAIRS. IT IS PRODUCED BY THIS PARTICULAR TYPE OF STRAIN OF BACTERIA.

IT ATTACKS THE LIVER, AND IS JUST AN INCREDIBLY TOXIC MOLECULE. THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION SETS THE LIMIT IN DRINKING WATER AT ONE PART PER BILLION.

A SINGLE DROP OF WATER AND A FULL TANK OR TRUCK.YOU CANNOT DENATURE IT. YOU CAN'T BOIL IT.

IT IS STILL TOXIC. WE HAVE OTHER TOXINS THAT ARE SHOWING UP. THEY ARE ALSO OF GREAT CONCERN BECAUSE THERE ARE DEGENERATIVE DISEASES.

THREE ARE FUNDED BY MARTIN COUNTY .

WE DID HAVE ONE IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY.

10 MILE CREEK SITE THAT GOT FLOODED OUT.

IT HAS NOT BEEN REPLACED. TO GIVE YOU AN EXAMPLE OF THE KIND OF DATA WE ARE LOOKING AT AND WHY IT IS OF PARTICULAR CONCERN RIGHT NOW. THOSE ARE FOR KILROY IT'S DOWN THE ST. LUCIE ESTUARY. AT THE TOP OF THE SCREEN THERE.

IF YOU LOOK AT JUST THE ANNUAL INPUT OF THE NUTRIENTS WE ARE CONCERNED ABOUT. NITROGEN AND PHOSPHORUS BEING THE KEY ONES FEEDING THESE ALGAE BLOOMS. THE ANNUAL AVERAGE OF PHOSPHATE COMING AND AT FOUR KEY SITES IN THE ST. LUCIE ESTUARY THE C 44 CANAL IN WILLOUGHBY.

YOU CAN SEE THAT THE BIGGEST AMOUNT OF PHOSPHATE IS COMING IN THROUGH THE C 23 NC 44 CANALS.

AND IT IS INCREASING. WHICH IS OF CONCERN.

IF YOU BREAK THAT DOWN INSTEAD OF LOOKING AT THE ANNUAL AVERAGE AND THE MONTHLY AVERAGES.

THERE'S QUITE A BIT OF VARIATION.

THE C 23 IS PUTTING A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF PHOSPHATE IN THE SUMMER MONTHS. COINCIDENT WITH THE RAINFALL.

TOTAL RING INCHES AT THE BOTTOM THERE.

YOU CAN SEE THAT IT DOES TRACK. > DR. EDITH WIDDER: FOR A LONG TIME WHEN I TALK TO PEOPLE ABOUT WHAT IS GOING ON IN THE LAGOON. THEY WANT TO KNOW WHAT IS THE SMOKING GUN. WHO DO WE BLAME FOR THIS MAN MESS? I TALKED ABOUT ALL THE DIFFERENT SOURCES OF POLLUTION. WHERE THEY COME FROM AND WHAT THEIR IMPACTS ARE. I USED TO SAY THERE IS NO SMOKING GUN. BUT ACTUALLY I THINK THERE IS A SMOKING GUN. THAT IS STORM WATER RUNOFF.

ALL THESE NUTRIENTS AND OTHER POLLUTANTS ENTERING THE LAGOON ARE BEING CARRIED THERE BY STORMWATER RUNOFF.

IT IS EGREGIOUS HERE IN FLORID .

BECAUSE OF ALL THE THINGS DONE EARLY ON TO DRAIN THE SWAMP.

VERYTHING WAS ABOUT GETTING THE WATER OFF THE LAND AS FAST AS WE POSSIBLY COULD. SO WE COULD TURN IT INTO USEFUL AGRICULTURAL LAND. PLACES TO DO HOMES ON.

ALL OF THAT HAS LED TO ALL OF THE PROBLEMS WE ARE HAVING NOW.

IT SPED UP THE WATER GETTING OFF THE LAND.

THIS IS NOT ORIGINAL IDEA. THIS IS A NUMBER OF STATES AROUND THE NATION THAT ARE FOCUSING ON SLOW THE FLOW CAMPAIGNS.THE IDEA IS TO SLOW THE FLOW.

SO YOU CAN HAVE A GREEN FILTER INSTEAD OF A GREAT FUNNEL.

THE WATER IS NATURALLY CLEANED UP.

WE CHARGE THE AQUIFER. THIS GREAT FUNNEL WE HAVE CREATED UP ASPHALT AND NON-PERMEABLE SERVICES ALLOWING THE POLLUTION TO RUSH OFF INTO THE LAGOON.

AROUND THE CHESAPEAKE BAY. THOSE ARE FOREST BUFFER ZONES.

AROUND THEIR FARM LAND. IT MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN TERMS OF THE AMOUNT OF RUNOFF THAT GOES INTO THE BAY.

SIMILARLY. PLACES LIKE VIRGINIA HAVE A SET OF GUIDELINES FOR VEGETATION MANAGEMENT.

THEY ARE TRYING TO DISCOURAGE THE SLOPE DOWN TO THE WATERFRONT. THERE IS NO WAY YOU CAN MANAGE THOSE WITHOUT HAVING THE FERTILIZER AND GRASS GOING INTO THE LAGOON. THIS HAS BEGUN TO BE PICKED UP AROUND THE LAGOON. THAT YOU SEE HERE THEY REPLACED THE GRASS THAT WENT TO THE EDGE OF THE BULKHEAD.

WITH THESE DEEP-ROOTED PLANTS. IT CAN BE VERY BEAUTIFUL.

IT ACTUALLY IS A VERY EFFECTIVE TOOL.

FOR REDUCING POLLUTION.WE WANTED TO DO MORE THAN JUST PAY LIP SERVICE TO THIS. IT IS PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT THIS. BUT WE WANTED TO MEASURE IT TO SEE HOW MUCH OF A DIFFERENCE YOU COULD ACTUALLY MAKE.

WE PARTNERED WITH THE CITY OF STUART.

AND DID A PROJECT AT SHEPHERDS PARK.

A DEMONSTRATION PROJECT. WHEN YOU ARE SEEING THERE.

AS THESE YELLOW POINTS. LIKE YOU SEE IN THE BOTTOM LEFT-HAND CORNER. OVER ON THE RIGHT-HAND CORNER HERE. IS WHERE THE DRAINS I SHOULD HAVE SAID BE DIRECTLY OUT INTO THE LAGOON.

IS TAKING THE WATER OFF OF THE PARK AND GOING RIGHT INTO THE LAGOON. ALONG THE EDGE OVER HERE.

THE WATER DURING THE RAINSTORM. WOULD RUNOFF DIRECTLY INTO THE LAGOON. WHAT WE DID.

WAS WE MEASURED, THE AMOUNT OF POLLUTION COMING OFF DURING RAIN EVENTS. AND WE FOUND SEXUALLY EXCEPTIONALLY HIGH LEVEL OF PHOSPHATE.THAT IS USUALLY THE DRIVER BEHIND THESE TOXIC ALGAE BLOOMS.SEEN FOR THE RUNOFF ON THE KORNEGAY. VERY HIGH PHOSPHATE LEVELS.

WE WORKED WITH A LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT.

TO RE-LANDSCAPE AND REPLACE THE GRASS RIGHT ONTO THE EDGE OF THE BULKHEAD WITH BUFFER DEEP ROOTED PLANTS.

AND WE GOT SIGNAGE PUT UP. THAT LIVE ON THE WATERFRONT.

THAT COULD IMPLEMENT THIS. WE HAVE BEEN TALKING TO VARIOUS GOVERNMENT AGENCIES ABOUT THE IDEA OF TRYING TO INCENTIVIZE THEM. IT TURNS OUT THAT IT REALLY DOES MAKE A VERY BIG DIFFERENCE.

SORRY I AM MISSING A SLIDE. WHEN WE DID THE AFTER.

OF PUTTING IN THE BUFFERED SHORELINES.

PHOSPHATE LEVELS DROPPED. I THINK THE REASON I LEFT IT OUT WAS BECAUSE I AM NOT READY TO SHARE THAT DATA YET.

WE DID THAT IN MY HOUSE. ON THE LEFT.

AND ON THE RIGHT. IS THE AFTER.

WE PUT IN WITH THE FRENCH DRAIN AFTER.ACTUALLY.

WE FACED THE BULKHEAD. THAT PROMOTES OYSTER DEVELOPMENT. AND WE HAVE A GREAT BUNCH OF OYSTERS CALLING IT NOW. THE IDEA HERE IS THAT WHEREVER NATURE CAN DO ITS THING. IT IS SO MUCH BETTER THAN WHAT WE HAVE DONE. THESE POLLUTION MAPS THAT THEY HAVE CREATED BY TESTING THE SENTIMENTS FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE LAGOON. WE FIND THIS IS AROUND THE

MOORINGS. THE WEST BANK WHICH IS ALL MANGROVE. IT IS A BUILDUP OF POLLUTION.

WHAT IS INTERESTING ESPECIALLY IN THIS MATTER.

IS THIS HOPE OF LAND RIGHT HERE.

AS A GOLF COURSE. THEY HAVE LIVING SHORELIES.

THEY HAVE MANGROVES. AROUND FILTERING.

JUST ACTING AS A NATURAL FILTRATION.

IT ACTS AS A GREEN FILTER. THE MORE PLACES WE CAN HAVE THAT. THE BETTER WE ARE GOING TO BE.

THEY REMOVE A LOT OF THE NATURAL HABITAT.

IN HIDING PLACES. IF YOU TALK TO A FISHERMAN.

THEY WILL TELL YOU ABOUT GOING OUT AND CASTING A CAST NET.

THEY GO BACK TO THE SAME PLACE THERE IS NO PLACE WHERE THE LITTLE FISH TO HIDE. BULKHEADS DO NOT STAND UP WELL TO STORM DAMAGE. AS WE HAVE MORE STORM AND SEA LEVEL RISE. WE WILL HAVE TO DEAL WITH THIS KIND OF EROSION IMPACTS. FROM STORM DAMAGE.

THESE ARE TWO SIDE-BY-SIDE PROPERTIES.

PRE-STORM. THIS IS A SHORELINE ON THE LEFT. RIGHT NEXT DOOR IS A LIVING SHORELINE. POST STORM.

THE HARDENED SHORELINE. WHICH WAS COMPLETELY WIPED OUT.

LIVING SHORELINE SURVIVED VERY WELL.

IT BREAKS UP THE ENERGY OF THE WAVES.

SO ONCE AGAIN IF WE COULD BE WORKING WITH INSURANCE COMPANIES. IN WHAT INCENTIVIZE PEOPLE WHEN THEY HAVE TO REPLACE THE BULKHEADS EVENTUALLY.

IT COULD BE MAKING A HUGE DIFFERENCE.

FOR THE LAGOON. WE REALLY NEED TO GET ACROSS TO PEOPLE THAT WE HAVE LOST. WE HAVE THIS PROBLEM OF CREATING BASELINES. SOME OF US SHOULD HAVE BEEN HERE FOR A LONG TIME. CAN'T REMEMBER WHEN THE LAGOON WAS HEALTHY.T USED TO BE AMAZING.

IT USED TO BE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CRYSTAL CLEAR WATERS.

YOU HEAR DESCRIPTIONS OF LOOKING OVER A BOAT AND THE ST.

LUCIE ESTUARY. AND SEEING ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT WHITE SAND ON THE BOTTOM.O MANY COLORED FISH THAT LOOKED LIKE AN IMPRESSIONIST PAINTING. THE BIRD LIFE, ANIMAL LIFE WAS FANTASTIC. THE THING IS, WE CAN HELP THIS AGAIN. WE DON'T HAVE THE KIND OF INDUSTRY THAT A LOT OF PLACES ARE REALLY UP AGAINST IT IN TERMS OF FIXING THE PROBLEMS THAT CREATED.

WE HAVE TO ALLOW NATURE TO DO ITS THING.

NORTH OF SAVANNAH HAS PROVEN TO BE IN RECENT YEARS.

ONE OF THE MOST DANGEROUS AND DEADLY PARTS OF THE ROAD.

THIS SECTION IS ENTIRELY WITHIN THE CITY ROAD OF FORT PIERCE.

I UNDERSTAND THAT ST. LUCIE COUNTY I HAVE ASKED THEM TO PAINT THE ROAD RECENTLY AS LAST WEDNESDAY.

THEIR ANSWER WAS TO COME AND ASK YOU GUYS TO DO THE ROAD.

AT A MINIMUM. I DON'T THINK MONEY SHOULD BE AN ISSUE.AFTER ALL. WE HAVE HAD RISING VALUES FOR ABOUT 10 YEARS NOW. WE HAD THE HIGHEST PROPERTY TAX IN THE STATE. WE HAVE INCREASED THE SALES TAX. AND MANY LOCAL GOVERNMENTS HAVE RECEIVED SIGNIFICANT COVID MONEY.
